With MenuSano, Windmill Bakery met provincial requirements to post nutrition info, using a simple, web-based calculator to analyze recipes, give customers clearer insight, and make healthier adjustments (like reducing sodium) without slowing down sales.
About Windmill Bakery
Windmill Bakery is a cottage-country staple in Muskoka, founded by a Dutch baker in 1976 and known for made-from-scratch favourites like apple beignets, almond cookies, and Christmas bread.
When the bakery went up for sale, longtime customers Grace and Dan Willows stepped in to keep it alive. They started by preserving the classic recipes, then grew a strong retail business from their main-street location.
As their retail and wholesale presence expanded, provincial health regulations required them to post nutritional information for their products, pushing them to find a simple, reliable way to calculate nutrition for every recipe.
The Challenge
How do you keep the classics people love, while meeting new compliance requirements as your retail business grows? That was Windmill Bakery’s challenge.
With a growing retail and wholesale presence, Windmill Bakery was required by provincial health regulations to post nutritional information for its products. But they needed a solution that was simple enough to use day to day, without turning nutrition compliance into a time sink.
They also wanted the numbers to be genuinely useful: clear nutrition insight they could trust, so they could understand what was in their recipes (including surprises) and make smart adjustments when needed.
Solution Timeline
"MenuSano makes it easy to adjust recipes. Seeing all of the nutritional information on paper is helpful, and it is inspiring us to create some new menu items. We love the menu we have now, but think it’d be nice to introduce some new items that might be beneficial at this time, both health-wise and trend-wise. The one thing we were surprised to find out is how much sodium our recipes contain. We thought we used minimal salt, but Menusano helped us learn that some our recipes contained a surprising amount, which made us change some of our recipes.”
