Nutrition Analysis Service FAQ

You will send us your recipe(s) including the weights and measurements for each ingredient and the serving sizes. Specifically, you will be asked for the following:

  • Serving Size
A serving size is a quantity of food that can be reasonably consumed at a single eating occasion. Both Health Canada and the Food and Drug Administration of the United States (FDA) has a table of reference amounts for food to use as a guideline. MenuSano will require the following serving size information to create a nutrition fact label:
    • Serving size in grams**
    • A household serving size equivalent to the serving size in grams. A household unit of measurement includes cups, tbsp, tsp, fractions (¼ pizza) or whole units (6 crackers). For US labels, oz or fl. oz is also acceptable. In some cases, household measurements are not required and just the grams measurement is sufficient. If you are unsure, just let us know and we will help.
    • For US labels, the number of servings per container
  • Ingredients list
If required, MenuSano can provide an ingredients list directly below the nutrition fact label. For custom ingredients, you will be required to provide the ingredients contained in them. The best way to provide this is with a photo of the ingredients list.
  • Allergens
If required, MenuSano can include an allergen statement on the nutrition fact label immediately after the ingredients list. The nutrition analysis team member will identify the allergens present in a recipe, however, for branded ingredients, a photo of the ingredients list will be required.
You will be required to provide the “may contain” statement. This is for the case of possible allergens that may exist in the food product as a result of cross-contamination. This is a precautionary statement. Here is an example:
    • Ingredients: White beans, Water, Sugars, Pork, Salt, Modified cornstarch, Onion powder, Mustard, Spices.
      Contains: Mustard
May contain(or May contain): Sesame, Soybeans

A nutrition analysis team member will create the recipe in MenuSano, create the nutrition fact label with the optional ingredients list and allergens. In 1-3 business days, we will send you the nutrition analysis and label.

** MenuSano can only generate a nutrition fact label in grams, oz, and mL. If other weights are required, MenuSano can conduct a nutrition analysis, however, a nutrition label cannot be provided with other units of measurement. Please ensure that you are aware of the measurements required on your nutrition fact label by your governing body.

We will require the ingredients used and how much of each ingredient. Our nutrition analysis rep may ask you for alternate units of measurement for your recipe. You may be asked to weigh certain ingredients and provide the weight in grams, especially for Custom Ingredients.

A custom ingredient in MenuSano is typically an ingredient that is not available in our database and is usually a product. It may be the case that the item does exist in our database, but for accuracy, it is better to use your product rather than a generic one from the database. In order for the nutrition analysis team to add a custom ingredient, a photo of the nutrition fact label on the product packaging is required. If that is not available, your supplier will be able to provide the nutrition information.

The turn around time for nutrition analysis is typically 3-5 business days. This may take longer if nutrition information of custom ingredients or alternate units of measurement are required. In cases of bulk labeling, there may be more time required. Please contact us for more information.

We have many types of Nutrition Fact Labels for Canada, the US, and the UK. You can request particular types of labels, or if you’re unsure, let us know if you have particular requirements and we can make suggestions.

Our list of available labels is always growing, and we currently support, in addition to common labels: Keto Labels, Cannabis Labels with and without THC Icons, as well as bilingual labels for those territories that require them.

To derive the nutrition facts of a meal, there are two ways to do this. The more traditional approach is a chemical analysis performed in a lab where food is incinerated and tested for its nutrient content. However, the results of this process are limited to that specific sample; unavoidable variations during preparation or ingredient variations cannot be accounted for. This also requires testing multiple samples to obtain an average, in turn making the process very costly – on average $800/dish.

The second type is called Theoretical Analysis which is the MenuSano method and is done via calculation by taking data from ingredients that have been previously chemically tested and scaling those nutrient values to match the amounts used in the final food product. Both the USDA and Health Canada have compiled a database that includes nutritional information for ingredients commonly found in the Canadian and US diet. Not only is MenuSano the more affordable solution, but it is also the more flexible and accurate approach to calculating nutritional facts.

Fo 1-10 Labels, the cost is $125/label. For 11+ labels, we are happy to discuss further pricing with you, and we offer bulk discounts.
